EYFS Curriculum

Intent

Our Reception pupils will work harmoniously, sensitively and with an understanding that they are part of something bigger than themselves. They will share their ideas and express their opinions using newly acquired vocabulary with confidence. They will develop core strength, coordination and agility. Our children will develop a love of reading and become storytellers; they will write for a purpose. They will be mathematical thinkers and problem solvers. Our children will be resilient, creative learners who appreciate the natural world.

For a small child there is no division between playing and learning; between the things he or she does 'just for fun' and things that are 'educational'. The child learns while living and any part of living that is enjoyable is also play.

Implementation

Our Early Years curriculum is supported and enhanced by a carefully considered, stimulating and enabling environment of continuous provision both indoors and out, offering a variety of challenge for all pupils across the seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Our provision changes and evolves with the requirements and the progression of the children’s skills offering appropriate challenge for all ability levels. We believe a good balance between adult directed focused learning and uninterrupted child-initiated play with sensitive interactions from adults ensures the best outcomes for pupils encouraging them to investigate, question, debate and challenge.

Phonics & early reading

We believe that for all our children to become fluent readers and writers, phonics must be taught through a systematic and structured phonics programme. We have adopted the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme to plan and deliver daily engaging phonics lessons.
