Etchingham CE Primary School

English

Intent

Our pupils will develop a love of reading, writing and discussion and will be prepared for life as successful and socially responsible citizens. They will be inspired by a rich and varied literary heritage and will read widely and often. They will take pride in their writing and will write clearly, imaginatively and accurately, and adapt their language and style for a range of contexts. Our pupils will be confident in the art of speaking and listening and they will use discussion to communicate and further their learning in all areas of the wider curriculum.

Literacy is the bridge from misery to hope.

(Kofi Annan)

Implementation

At the Riverside Federation we provide an English curriculum that is ambitious and designed to help all learners to develop the skills and knowledge that they need to communicate effectively.

We are a ‘reading school' as we recognise that reading is a key life skill and a curriculum enabler.  We focus on promoting a love of language and reading and ensuring that our children read as often and as widely as possible in order to improve their fluency and understanding.

Each class uses high quality, rich, class texts which are linked to their Learning  Journey, to teach and inspire a range of reading and independent writing.  Lesson sequences themselves build progressively towards an extended piece of writing.

We teach the National Curriculum and each year group bases its planning on a skills progression document which shows the clear progression of skills through each year group.
