PRINCIPLES

Pupil Premium Funding is money given to schools from the Government to support the progress of pupils vulnerable to underachievement as shown by Government statistics. This includes children entitled to Free School Meals, Looked After Children and Children with English as an additional language

All members of staff  and  governors accept responsibility for ‘socially disadvantaged’ pupils and are committed to meeting their pastoral, social and academic needs within a caring  special school environment.  This is an essential, integral part of the supportive ethos of the whole school community.
 
As with every child in our care, a child who is considered to be ‘socially disadvantaged’ is valued, respected and entitled to develop to his/her full potential, irrespective of need.

The Government believes that the pupil premium funding, which is based on the number of children entitled to free school meals on or who have been entitled to free school meals in the past 6 years on roll, is a way to address the current underlying inequalities between vulnerable children and their peers. It is for schools to decide how the pupil premium funding is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils who attract the funding

At Etchingham C E School, we recognise that not all pupils who are ‘socially disadvantaged’ are registered or qualify for Free School Meals, and we reserve the right to allocate the pupil premium funding to support any pupils or groups of pupils the school has legitimately identified as being ‘socially disadvantaged.’ Pupil Premium Funding is allocated following an internal needs analysis, which will identify priority classes, groups or individuals.

The range of provision :

  • Facilitating pupils’ access to education including social / emotional support
  • Facilitating pupils' access to broader  curriculum  opportunities
  • Additional teaching and learning opportunities
  • Alternative support and intervention.

Governors will ensure that the needs of disadvantaged children are accurately assessed through Pupil Progress meetings and formative assessment and that effective provision is made in School.  The Standards Committee meetings will monitor this for effectiveness and undertake monitoring visits.   Staff will regularly track pupils progress over time to assess the effectiveness of the provision made and change the type or frequency of such provisions or interventions to secure the best outcomes for individual pupils.   Governors will consider the progress and attainment data relating to the school's socially disadvantaged pupils in the context of National and Local Authority outcomes

 

 

SUCCESS CRITERIA

The evaluation of this policy is based on how quickly the school can ‘narrow the gap’ between socially disadvantaged pupils and their peers. Targets will be identified and evaluated annually and included in the School Development Plan.
 
The success criteria for the Pupil Premium Policy are:

  • Early intervention and support for socially disadvantaged children
  • The vast majority of socially disadvantaged children will meet their individual targets.
  • Effective parental pupil school support.
  • Having an effective system for identifying, assessing and monitoring pupils.
  • Having a whole-school approach.
  • Creating a positive school culture and ethos in which pupil differences are recognised and valued so as to develop confident and independent learners.

APPEALS

Any appeal in connection with the disposition of the pupil premium funding will be dealt with through the Governors’ appeals panel.
